The skies opened up today across the city and left the old capital heavily saturated. Streets all over the city were flooded. In some areas, the water reached as high as 12 inches causing some vehicles to stall, and creating a nightmare for commuters and motorists alike. The unexpected downpour caught many by surprise and Monica Bodden stopped by Belize's Meteorological Department to find out where all the rain was coming from.

"A bunch of severe thunder storms that affected the northern half of the country this morning and it continue through this afternoon. The thunder storms dump about 2-3 inches of rain fall over parts of the country this morning. The rain was pretty intense. We know the problem with Belize City is drainage. Belize City is low laying and any major amounts of rainfall produces flooding in parts of the city. It seems that conditions will improve and the flooding should subside later today and tomorrow. The pattern that has been producing this intense thunder storm is gradually moving away, so we can see some improvements coming tomorrow. Later on this afternoon we should not have these thunder storms around. I don't expect these to linger around through tonight. Tomorrow should be significantly better than today. We can see on the loop here, we see a band of thunder storms coming through the Belize City area and heading towards the northwest, these are carried by a southeasterly wind that is pushing all the activity to the northwest."
