Prison Officer Could Become Inmate

A prison officer could end up behind bars if he doesn't pay a fine after he pleaded guilty to drug possession today. Thirty-three year old Armando Alamilla, a prison officer who attempted to smuggle 84 grams of Cannabis into Belize Central Prison in Hattieville this morning, was fined $10,000 today when he appeared in the #6 Magistrate's Court and pleaded guilty to drug trafficking.

Magistrate Dorothy Flowers, who imposed the fine, gave Alamilla until January 31, 20111 to pay. If he defaults on payment he will serve three years.

The bust occurred around 7:50 this morning when Alamilla reported for work. Basic Grade 1 prison officer Victor Aguilar reported to the police that when he searched a grey and black knapsack Alamilla was carrying he found 5 transparent plastic bags which contained cannabis. The cannabis amounted to 84 grams.
