Charged For Manslaughter 16 Months Later

The accident happened over a year ago - but Seventy three year old retired businessman Orlando Espejo, a resident of number Two Neal's Pen Road, was just charged today. He was arraigned on charges of Manslaughter by negligence when he appeared today in the Number Two Magistrate's court. Espejo was also charged with causing death by careless conduct, driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention, and negligent grievous harm.

Senior Magistrate, Sharon Fraser explained to him that she will not take a plea because the offences are indictable. She offered him a bail of Seven Thousand dollars, and adjourned his case until November 18th. The incident occurred on June 13th, 2009 between miles 29 and 30 on the Northern highway.

According to reports, Espejo was driving a green Mazda car heading north when it collided with an Isuzu D-Max driven by Vicente Rivera travelling from Orange Walk. On impact the Isuzu overturned with its four wheels in the air and Rivera was flung from the vehicle. He died on the spot. A passenger in the Isuzu, Amidette Rubio, was injured but survived the accident.
