Where Raylene Was Killed
posted (October 19, 2010)
We have now recorded 105 murders for 2010 - which makes it the most murderous year in Belize's history - eclipsing the 103 murders recorded in 2008.

And the three murders that have come to surface over the last weekend are among the most troubling: an attorney and his wife waylaid and murdered in their home, and a young mother killed because another young woman simply wanted her baby. And to get it, she hired three men to kill 18 year old Raylene Dyer and steal the baby. We try to avoid overstatement but that one really does make your head spin…and today Andrea Polanco went to the scene of the murder looking for answers:…

Andrea Polanco, Reporting
These three men twenty one year old Jason Anderson, twenty one year old Darren Banner and 24 year old Brandon Budna all residents of Roaring Creek Village were yesterday charged with the murder of 18 year old Raylene Dyer while 19 year old Aracely Cahueque was charged with the crime of child stealing of 3 month old Ravaan Dyer.

18 year old Raylene Dyer had her daughter with her when she left home on the eight of October. Her family became worried when she didn't return. The family did their own investigation and they found the baby in Ontario Village - turns out that she was killed for that baby.

Indira Cayetano, Sister
"No they didn't confess about why they kill her but we know the motive was to steal the baby because remember a baby had to be presented because this girl was telling this guy lies that she was pregnant and at that moment she would have done anything to present that baby, and Raylene was the ideal target. If you are going to steal a baby and pass that baby as your child, the first person you will take out of the equation is the real mother because that mother will come and look for her child come hell or high water. I understand, I have heard this from the young lady personally that she only knew my sister since September and now October my sister is dead. What kind of person is that? And the guys involved, I understand that they say they never knew the young lady; a beautiful young lady, they didn't know her from anywhere. They were given an instruction and they took care of what they were told to do."

The confessions of the men charged with Raylene's murder led to this crime scene- some two and a half miles off the Western Highway near the Valley of Peace road.

It is believed that this bloodstained spot marks where Raylene was killed. Her family alleges that her head was cut off on this very same spot where police found a rosary that she wore. But that single shred of evidence is no consolation, this grieving family only wants to know one thing:

Indira Cayetano, Sister
"Like what my mom says, my mom is a very God fearing person and she said all she wanted to know from the guys who kill my sister was what was my sister's last words and God will see justice. It's causing us pain, it's causing us heartache, sleepless nights and a lot of worries and knowing the manner in which they kill her that senseless way because it was another senseless murder. I don't know what to say."

A slaughter area on a farm is just a few feet away from where Raylene Dyer was killed. The owners of the farm said that everything appeared normal and they had no idea that someone was even killed there.

About two feet in front of this slaughter house is the Belize River, it is in this river that the killers confessed to throwing Raylene's body. While the police say that they continue to search for the body, the families just want closure, which is very difficult for them at this moment:

Indira Cayetano, Sister
"We need to give my sister a proper closure, a proper burial. Without a body how is that possible, even when dogs die City Council pick them up and dump them somewhere. They are not just left out there on the streets. They dump my sister body in a river, what will become of that, a river that is crocodile infested. There is a possibility we may never find a body."

Divers have searched the area and police have checked but they still have not found a body.

Yet still - even without the body - based on the strength of a confession, police have charged 21 year old Darren Banner, and 20 year old Jason Anderson, both construction workers of Roaring Creek; and 24 year old Brandon Budran, a U.B student residing in Belmopan.

19 year old UB student Araceli Cahueque of Belmopan was charged with child stealing.
