12 Years For Manslaughter

38 year old Guatemalan national, Alejandro Hernandez Damian who was charged with murder and pled guilty to manslaughter was sentenced to 12 years when he appeared in the Belmopan Supreme Court today.

Damian was charged with the murder of 27 year old Clementino Enriquez, a nationalized Belizean, who was bludgeoned to death with a stone, on December 3rd of 2007.

The incident occurred at St. Margaret Village on the Hummingbird Highway. Enriquez was sleeping on the floor of the verandah of Jacqueline's Bar, when Damian took a big stone and struck him three times to the face.

Enriquez died while being transported to the Belmopan Hospital. Justice Troadio Gonzalez handed down the 12 year sentencing after hearing pleas for mitigation. Senior Crown Counsel, Cecil Ramirez represented the prosecution.
