No Christmas For Gonguez’s Family; He’s Still In Jail
posted (December 21, 2010)
22 year old Belize City resident Oscar Dennis Gonguez is still locked up in a Guatemalan jail tonight.

As Christmas draws near, his family is getting desperate. That desperation almost turned into incarceration for his 3 sisters yesterday - when they went to Melchor to visit him.

What started out as a trip to see their brother in jail ended up with the 3 women being cornered by Melchorenos and Guatemalan police. In fact- if it wasn't for the intercession of a Belizean who lives in Melchor they might also be in jail tonight!

The fault they say is with a man who promised to help them. But he turned out to be nothing but a con-man who's "scurvved " them out of three hundred and fifteen dollars - and has nothing to show for it.

Sharamae Gonguez - one of the three sisters who almost got locked up told Monica Bodden what happened:…

Sharamae Gonguez - Sister of Oscar Gonguez
"The person who took my sisters to Melchor the first, we don't know what deal he made with the taxi man over there and yesterday the same taxi man came after my sister and told them that he want his money or else the policeman will lock us up and after that a lot of Spanish people and the police attack us. The vehicle that we were in; the taxi man cross the vehicle 2 times and he didn't want us to pass. I ask my sister what is his problem. This man state that he want his $75 that they owe him but they don't owe him because it is not them and he that made any arrangement. He only talk Spanish and my sisters only talk English and this man that we got to take us to translate, but it looks like he con the taxi man out of his money, this taxi man wants to get violent with my sisters. I told my sisters that we should go because that cannot happen, if we have to get in trouble over here they will have 4 of us lock up for nothing."

According to Gonguez, her 2 sister gave the conman forty dollars to pay the Guatemalan taxi man - the last trip they made. Money, he did not pay.

Sharamae Gonguez - Sister of Oscar Gonguez
"My sister say that the man that they got to hire to take them over that side, The man told them to go and he stay with the taxi man, so my sisters don't know what kind of deal Murray nor the taxi man make behind their back because Murray get the money in his hands to pay the taxi man because he tell my people that it was 40 quetzal for the gas. I don't know how the exchange goes over that side but that's what he told my sisters. He said that he will put the gas in the taxi to take them to the jail and to bring them back and that is all that my sister say but they don't know if he paid the taxi man or not, so when we went yesterday that was what we face; the taxi man is chasing us and he wants his money and he went to call the police."

Monica Bodden
"So you had to run over the border?"

Sharamae Gonguez - Sister of Oscar Gonguez
"Yes we had to run over to our side of the border, we didn't even to jail to take food for my brother, but the man that was driving us yesterday went to take the food for us for my brother."

The family says this the first time this individual has ripped them off - in fact he has scammed them of three hundred and fifteen dollars to be exact.

Sharamae Gonguez - Sister of Oscar Gonguez
"My brother didn't get anything from him, my brother just got his visit that 'your people's sent me to look for you' I don't know all what he told my brother and the last visit when I met him in Belmopan and ask him to take my brother birth paper that was when I gave him $100 he didn't give me any receipt for the $100 and he went and told me that he will not left from Belmopan until 12 o' clock to go visit my brother. I don't know if he had gone or didn't go, but apparently he never went. All that he tell us is that the lawyer has my brother files, the lawyer has my brother social security card and his birth paper. When somebody call and about my brother's birth paper they tell us that Murray didn't pay the lawyer and that Murray didn't give the lawyer my brother birth paper nor anything, so it was a scam that he was doing to us. They told us that he had already stole somebody money and that's why he went to jail."

Monica Bodden
"He sent back your brother birth paper?"

Sharamae Gonguez - Sister of Oscar Gonguez
"Yes, he sent it through post office and my mother has to pay $6.75 to take it out. The $0.75 cents is for GST."

Monica Bodden
"And no money....."

Sharamae Gonguez - Sister of Oscar Gonguez
"He text us yesterday and say that he don't owe anybody any money and we are talking fool. So we told him how we will be talking fool when the taxi man is chasing us. He says that he didn't make any deal or bargain with nobody so we don't know what to do or what to say. Right now when the time comes to go back to Melchor it will only be me alone. I don't know If I will come back living or dead."

Oscar Dennis Gonguez is to appear in a Guatemalan Court on the 27th of this month.

Bernadine Gonguez - Mother of Oscar Gonguez
"As far as I know they told us that he will get a legal aid lawyer from over there, the name I am not sure yet but that as far as I know. They say that the amount of cannabis or whatever was 265 grams, that is what they tell us. That is all that i know right now. If they find him guilty over that side, they say 5 years fine and confine, right now not even a Christmas is at my house because one person is missing out of the family so I don't know how we will really get through this Christmas without my son home because then he is the next to his father and he will always be around for us but this year it looks like he won't be here at all. So I don't think it's possible for us to have a Christmas home, although I am the only parent at home who is working right now, if he was home it would still be good for all of us."

When we contacted the man accused of conning the Gonguez family, he told us he had no comments and that he has retained an attorney.
