The Commercial Side of Christmas
posted (December 21, 2010)
Belize's economy may be finishing up its worst year in memory - but hope for a last second comeback springs eternal at Christmas time. That's because - as we are all so fond of saying - "Christmas bring ih own money".

But is it doing so this year? Monica Bodden took to the downtown area to ask business owners and managers:…

Monica Bodden Reporting
Christmas is only 4 days away - and despite the hard times. Things were looking bright downtown Albert Street this morning. According to many of the merchants - even though business is slow - it could have been worse.

Dolly Dona - Store Manager, Mirage
"This year has been very slow but last week was ok but maybe in the weekends it like ok but weekdays is very slow."

Alinna Alvarez, Salesperson, Mikado
"So far it look ok and we thank the people for shopping at Mikado. The sale has been very good, Last year was a bit slow but this year it's much better and we look forward for them to come and shop with us hopefully next year as well."

Monica Bodden
"You guys have any promotional deals for the Christmas and holidays?"

Alinna Alvarez, Salesperson, Mikado
"So far we don't hear anything about any other promotion but we did have on Sundays but not for right now. We have like these beautiful fabric right here, they are only $5.95 a yard and they are very reasonable and you can also use it for curtain material and different type things."

And even though business is a bit slow at this jewelry shop - there are still a whole bunch of promotional deals.

Ronald Maine - Medina's House of Jewelry
"Business is kind of dragging its feet but we know it's coming and we are waiting for our customers to come along and we have a lot of goodies here right now for them so you guys can come on down. Right now we are having a promotion on all our gold jewelry, we are having a 10% off and on all the silver jewelry we are having a 20% off. We also have a special on wedding bands - wedding set, we like the family setting so we are trying to provide special on the wedding sets."

And if you are looking not only for that special gift - but also an outfit for the occasion- you might want to check Nexus Boutique which is located in the Down Town Shopping Plaza.

Melissa Coleman - Retail Manager, Nexus Boutique
"I know it's Christmas time, everybody is looking for good deals, nice outfits for male and females but I have to tell you that Nexus is definitely the place to be, we are located on the 2nd floor of the downtown plaza, it's very busy, it's convenient, downtown, apart from the clothing that we cater to both male and female, we also have footwear and we recently open our shoe department, we are the exclusive agent for Nike here in Belize, we are proud to say we have that contract and we also have shoes and sandals. You name it for women as well, not necessarily extremely high heels, I more say it's realistic fashion, realistic heel so it's wearable and its great."

Later this week - we'll talk to shoppers about how they're stretching their dollars…
