Liberty Children’s Home
posted (December 31, 2010)
A group of college students from the University of Southern California is in Belize - helping out at the Liberty Children's Home in Ladyville. As a part of their trip the students have been working on a greenhouse project for the facility.

The idea is that Liverty will now be able to produce more vegetables to supply their kitchen and also generate some revenue. Today Seven News spoke with the director of the Director of Liberty Children's Home.

Delfina Mitchell, Director, Liberty Children's Home
"It was a dream that came through, we have been wanting a green house for so long because from the time Liberty open we have grown our vegetables and herbs here but because we do things organically we don't use any chemicals and the iguanas and squirrels - sometimes they think that we plant the vegetables for them. The green house is going to be a source of protection where we can grow the vegetables in a control environment. We can produce more vegetables year round and we hope that along with supplying vegetables for the kitchen it will also be a source of revenue as we sell the excess produce."

"How this green house came about is we had a group of 20 college students from the University of Southern California came here and they did a fund raiser to raise the finances to pay for the supplies and then they came and built the green house. What is so exciting about that is Liberty relies a lot on volunteers and we always have volunteers in and out of Liberty, but we've never had a group of college students before, normally we have missionaries or people that just make contact with us through an organization or by their own research and come help us out, but this is actually an actual university that made contact with us and came to do this so we are very appreciative and thankful and hope that it is something that continues."

The students return back to their home in California on Tuesday.
