Belama Substation: Why Was It Shut Down
posted (January 10, 2011)
Grocery Stores in the Belama area have been victim to a spate of robberies over the past few weeks - and residents feel it may well have something to do with the shutting down of the community policing substation.

Today Seven News asked police press officer Fitzroy Yearwood - what's the deal with the locked up substation?

Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer
"To say that it has been close down that is not true. I know that it is being renovated. Recently because I am from that neighborhood I can recall seeing someone painting the building, I know that several infrastructural changes has been made to the building. But to say that it is shut down - no, we still have officers responding to report from the Belama area so as long as you call the 911 or the 227-2222 we have officers in that area operating. Some of them operating out of Caribbean Shores which is the head office for the Belama precinct. We have the same inspector in charge of both precincts and we do have officers that respond to report. To see that the building is not open is not a sign that it is close down or in any way will be close down at anytime."

Monica Bodden
"Well what was the situation?"

Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer
"I am sure that the building was undergoing renovations but I will have to check on that and get back to you."

It is still not certain when renovations on the building will be completed. And so we cannot say when the station will be reopening -but we'll be sure to keep you posted.

We note that Belama is only one of quite a few shut-down substations in the city.

As for Yearwood, he's still police press officer. Last week we reported he was on the outs to be replaced by Raphael Martinez, who was announced as press officer for the Ministry of Police and Public Safety. Apparently, the arrangement is that Martinez will work at the ministry level with responsibility for all p-r matters related to the police department, National Forensic Science Service, the Belize Central Prisons and the Headquarters of Ministry of Police and Public Safety while Yearwood will handle police matters.
