BGYEA Vs. Hon Witz
posted (February 1, 2011)
All is not harmonious in Harmonyville at mile 43 on the Western Highway and The Belize Grassroots Youth Empowerment Association, BGYEA says that area representative Ramon Witz is the one stirring up unrest.

The divide is between the Harmonyville residents - selected by BGYEA - and immigrant Belizeans who they say are being encouraged by Witz to take vast tracts of land - in their area.

It has the appearances of a dicey, dangerous situation - and BGYEA president Nigel Petillo spoke on it today at the COLA protest in front of the Prime Minister's Office:…

Nigel Petillo, President BGYEA
"For the longest I am trying to call you, I am back and forth at your office. I call you again this morning and you didn't respond. I don't know what type of message you are sending out there with the settlers out at Harmony Ville but you are creating a stir. You are creating a situation. Have you no respect for the government decision? Have you no respect for Gaspar Vega's decision with that we are waiting to hear from you again."

"Last week my board members and I met with Hon. Gaspar Vega, we explain the situation that was arising in Harmony Ville. I even explain to him that Hon, Ramos Witz have been creating a stir in the community. He has been influencing those who have been settling on the land to bring in more of their people. It's a political thing. It's a way for him to garner his votes. His chairman Rudy Barrera of Cotton Tree Village has been doing the same thing. With that said eventually they started having their own meeting. They start inviting their own people. They start just going and clearing land in huge pieces - 10 - 20 acres, even 80 acres."

"Is the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister in support of your organizations' efforts or are they in support of Mr. Witz?"

Nigel Petillo, President BGYEA
"I have spoken to the Deputy Prime Minister and right away I see the man act. I feel like he is listening to us, he is supporting us. He has call the police to support us. For quite some time I have a battle with the officer in charge here Mr. Henderson explaining to him that I have been given authority by the ministry of natural resources to survey. He say he cannot act on my words, I am not an official individual I need to respond to him with a letter."

We were unable to reach Witz for comment…
