“The Third Way” Celebrates An Anniversary
posted (February 18, 2011)
The PUP celebrated the 60th. anniversary of its founding in September of the last year, while the UDP celebrated its 37th. anniversary.

That's the standard for mass parties, but as a third party, the PNP wants no part of that long history and the baggage that comes with it.

The PNP celebrated its fourth anniversary today and founder-slash-leader Will Maheia discussed why it is an important milestone for his group:…

Wil Maheia, PNP Leader
"We are here today it's our 4th anniversary and we are a party that's here to stat that would give the Belizean people an option. They now have an option. They don't have to put up with this madness anymore. They have a choice and the PNP is their choice."

Jules Vasquez
"How would you respond to the criticism that is that 4 years you haven't made any real electoral progress? You all have failed to get even 10% of the vote in any election that you've contested so far."

Wil Maheia, PNP Leader
"Yes well so far we have only contested two elections, so immediate after the lost election it was just a matter of months before the next election so really they were really close together but you can look at our progress. We have grown today on our 4th anniversary we have the privilege of announcing the candidate for Stann Creek West - Basilio Mes. candidate for Stann Creek West - Basilio Mes. Candidate for Stann Creek West - Basilio Mes."

Basilio Mes, PNP - SC West
"I choose not to run for any of the major parties because at this time to me they are basically both the same so I didn't choose to run with them."

Jules Vasquez
"What do you see as your comparative advantage compare to Rodwell Ferguson or Melvin Hulse or for that matter Denzil Jenkins?"

Basilio Mes, PNP - SC West
"Well both of them as we know as history says they both fail their constituency and I am of Mayan ethnicity and of course I love all the other people in the area. I work in Placencia and I believe people are ready now for a change and so basically what I am trying to tell you is that people are just fed up with the two parties."

Jules Vasquez "You are out there you know the proclivities of voters. Voters want to elect a minister. If you do not have 31 candidates they don't feel that you are worth their vote."

Wil Maheia, PNP Leader
"I don't think so not today. I think the Belizean voter is much savvier than they were 5 or 10 years ago. They realize that all the money the PUP pump in the last election did not win them the election. I believe that the Belizean people have seen the trend around the world; look at England where a 3rd party has emerge. In Trinidad 3rd parties form coalition government. In Canada, in Germany so I think that the trend has now reach Belize. The Belizean voters are much more savvy, they are much more educated and they now have an option, they have a choice."

Maheia says his party and the VIP have a working agreement, or as he called it a union, wherein they agree to not field candidates in divisions where the other third party is already running….
