Murder to Manslaughter For Shane Juarez

Another convicted killer had his sentenced reduced….

Twenty three year old Shane Juarez, who was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, was sentenced to 15 years today by Belize Court of appeal after his conviction of murder was substituted with manslaughter. It was the view of the judges of Belize Court of Appeal that the trial judge had failed to properly direct the jury on manslaughter.

In April 2010 Juarez was convicted of the murder of Mark Young and sentenced to life imprisonment. The incident occurred on April 12, 2008 in Hope Creek Village, Stann Creek District. According to the evidence which came out at the trial, Young and Juarez, who apparently were friends, were drinking at a bar and they went to Juarez's house. Young then drew a machete and reminded Juarez of an incident in which Juarez had struck a friend of Young on his head with a bottle. Young then swung the machete at Juarez who avoided the blow and took the machete away from Young. Young then fell into a pit latrine, struck his head and fractured his skull and died. Juarez was represented at the Appeal Court hearing by Attorney Antonette Moore. The Director of Public Prosecutions Cheryl Lyn Vidal represented the respondent.
