“I’ll Fly Away”: The Man Called “Fidgit Bird”
posted (March 21, 2011)
And while that Santa Elena man was killed in San Ignacio, a resident of Georgeville in the Cayo district was killed in Belize City.

He is 24 year old Marlon Jones, known in the city as "Fidgit Bird." Since 2007, he's been in the news a number of times, accused of attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm and grievous harm for allegedly shooting at and injuring people. But, to our knowledge, he was never convicted, and he was never charged for murder. Still, the Cayo boy had racked up many enemies in the city - and on Saturday morning, death went looking for him. Here's what happened:.

Jules Vasquez Reporting
24 year old Marlon Jones was shot here in this old wooden building in front of his home on Louise Bevans Street at 9:00 on Saturday morning. He was socializing with three friends when a man came up and shot him in the back.

His mother and family live in Georgeville - she told us with resignation about the fate of her son:

Greta Jones, Mother of Deceased
"Saturday I was sitting under the bus stop with two other guys. About after 9 am my phone rang and I said 'hello' my baby daughter call me and say that Marlon got shot, right away I asked if he was dead, she said no he is not dead yet. I said alright then I will listen to hear the rest. I came inside and about half an hour after she call me and said that he died and I said alright then no problem."

Jules Vasquez
"It's hard."

Greta Jones, Mother of Deceased
"It's hard yes but what else could I have done? He is already dead."

A resignation to cruel fate that she formed over the six years since her son left home in Georgeville:

Greta Jones, Mother of Deceased
"As a young boy when you reach the age of 16-17 years old, i would call it the crazy age, so he had his ups and down here in Goergeville and after that he went to Belize. But I can't say what part of Belize City he live because I don't go to Belize City. Every time when he call me is because he is in prison, he would ask if I was upset with him and I ask him what did he do again. I told him that he will not see me there. I will not go to look for him because he knows that we didn't send him to do whatever he did."

Jules Vasquez
"You think his past finally came for him?"

Greta Jones, Mother of Deceased
"Well, I don't know what to say. The thing is they always say because of friends - they blame friends, but when it is your time it is just your time. That's is destiny, he couldn't get away from that."

And while this mother has resigned herself to the fact, that doesn't mean she isn't grieving:

Greta Jones, Mother of Deceased
"When the news came I cry because as a mother and it is something very sudden, I cried it out but then it had already happen, I can't bring him back. there is nothing else I can do, I can't bring him back."

Marlon Jones was the father of a one year old son. He had recently moved back to the city from San Ignacio…
