Easter Camps Finish
posted (April 29, 2011)
Over 300 children have been busy the entire Easter at the 5th annual Rose Classic Basketball games.

The closing ceremony was held today at the Birds Isle basketball Court. And Seven News was there.

Zenaida Moya-Flowers, Mayor of Belize City
"For the past 5 years we are doing this at Bird's Isle venue and this year we had 300 children and for the 5th year the Belize City council has co-sponsored this event. When Cleon approach me in 2006 and he spoke to me about basketball, basketball is what I love and so immediately I said that is definitely something that we would want to sponsor. Secondly because Easter break is a time when young people don't have a lot of do. A lot of them don't have a lot to do, we said instead of having them idling on the streets or around the neighborhoods lets ensure that there is a positive program like this for them to attend, so that is the reason. I would say that we have been growing. This year we had 300, I think initially we started with around 89 young people, I recall we had little kids. This year again we have very little kids but we have 300 and I believe that It just continues growing. They get their jersey and we ensure that at least we also present them with awards so that they know that this isn't just playing as well because you always need to move to another level and ensuring that there is still that competitive nature and ensure that awards are there for them to win, ensures that they move their game up a bit and so this year they have their awards and they were looking forward in ensuring that they still compete in a positive manner and so we have a lot of them receiving awards this year as well."

The Belize City Council says they are planning on pushing a more active sport agenda for youngster. The other big Easter camp - which is the Crime Stoppers Football Camp at the MCC ended today with an award ceremony including the sharing of medals, awards of appreciation and playing prestige awards were given out.
