An Early Mother’s Day For Special Ladies
posted (May 6, 2011)
Mother's Day will also be celebrated this coming Sunday, but if you were at the House of Culture this afternoon, you would have thought it was being celebrated today. More than 60 mothers were treated to a tea party which featured entertainment and refreshments, at the breezy seaside House of Culture, compliments the National Institute of Culture and History. The women all members of HELPAGE Belize had a chance to reminisce on the good ole days while shaking a leg or two. HELPAGE's Executive Director, Sharon Polack says the party is a real treat for the mothers.

Sharon Polack, HELPAGE's Executive Director
"Our members really look forward to mother' day because we try to make all the mothers very special, celebrate with one another and some day they will celebrate with their families but today they will celebrate with other mothers and this tea party is a real special tribute to them because the people here at the House of Culture have really put out themselves and really being good and that's what they want. hey want to feel special."

"Who are these mothers today? Do they have children, grandchildren?"

Sharon Polack, HELPAGE's Executive Director
"Yes we have mothers here - actually earlier we celebrated one that had 18 children. Only the mothers were invited actually, not all our members. Only the members who qualify to be mothers are here today and a lot of them live on their own but a lot of them do live with family and living with family also comes with a price tag in the sense that they are working to look after grandchildren and children still but here they are honored so they are being served and being honored and we just want them to feel special today."

"Today we prepared a tea session - coffee/tea along with light refreshments but it's the entertainment and just the ambiance of the House of Culture which we are really giving to them. We've contracted the services of Jorge Ernesto Babb, Ms. Shirley Ferguson as well as Jeffrey Gillett all the way from Florida who was entertaining them with music - grown folks music, the music of yester years and of course there will be some dancing. Also along with the help of HELPAGE Belize we decided to honor 8 of the women out there. Women who are leaders in their own little field. The 8 women were chosen by HELPAGE but NICH provided them with a gift as well as a certificate saying thank you for nurturing our Belizean families."
