Moma’s Got A Machete!
posted (May 9, 2011)
On Friday night's news we told you about the brothers Pook: 22 year old Michael, 20 year old Ryan and a 17 year old minor. All three were charged for the murder of Errol "Lighta" Ferguson.

Ferguson, a taxi driver, was chopped and stabbed to death just after 7:00 on Thursday morning.

As we told you, the case was not so clear cut, because Ferguson and two other men had allegedly gone into the home of one of the Pook's earlier that morning - armed with what later appeared to have been a toy gun, and accused Pook of stealing his car battery.

That's where Pook started the machete assault and it finished around the corner.

And while the element of apparent provocation is one thing, another is that all the players in the story live in the same general neighborhood, and now the Pook family says that friends of the deceased are threatening them. We found them in a state of militant defiance today - as they begged police to intervene:…

Jules Vasquez Reporting
This is the machete that Adelita Pook says she has been forced to walk with after her three sons were remanded to prison for murder on Friday.

Adelita Pook, Mother Of 7
"I had enough, I can't take in anymore. I walk on the street with a machete in my hand and whenever I meet anybody who threatened my family, the police will have to come and pick me up. I have to defend my family and if they kill my husband it is me that has to defend the rest of my family."

Jules Vasquez
"You say you walk with a machete, but you just mean that in a figurative way. You are not really walking with a machete."

Adelita Pook, Mother Of 7
"I am really walking with a machete. This is for real, I have to walk with a machete to defend my kids and my family because nobody will kill any of my kids again and the threats that they are sending are for real, because they stop me out there and tell me that I cannot walk on Police Street. I let them know that nobody will not stop me from walking on Police Street. I live back here, my kids have to go to school and they have to go at the shop."

Reginio Pook, FATHER OF ACCUSED
"My daughter-in-law leave right from here yesterday afternoon taking her baby to her grandmother mother's day event. A car pull up and followed her the entire way, some of the same bad guys who are sending the threats - pull up and followed her to the entrance of the burying ground. She went on to the bus stop and the car went in the other direction. When she leave from where she was and came to in front of her mother's area the car was right there again. These are the quality of life we have to live in these ghetto areas in St. Martin's De Porres. Threat come to us. I choose not to name the names of the people because I know them. Threats comes to us and up to yesterday threats comes back to us - 'they will kill me' and my wife will scrape her two daughters off the streets. She will run crazy and kill herself thereafter, that's the threat coming to us."

Jules Vasquez
"And it's not something that you can take likely?"

Reginio Pook, FATHER OF ACCUSED
"i am not taking it likely, I already went to the police station and made a report there."

The family says their sons have been victimized: one was charged for a murder which was in self defence, and the other two were wrongfully charged they say:

Adelita Pook, Mother Of 7
"The one who had defended himself, he is not supposed to be in jail for that because it was in his house that they went. I study the law - when you go in and invade somebody house you can do anything to them. This is past the mark."

Reginio Pook, FATHER OF ACCUSED
"Two innocent guys are picked up and in remand. The one who did the crime that led to this fatal incident in still here walking about. So then where are our enforcement officers?"

And now the family says they do not want to take matters into their own hands

Reginio Pook, FATHER OF ACCUSED
"I do not want to take the law into my hand. It is not right. I go through the proper procedure every time and do what I have to do. It is left to the police now to do their part of their job. If they don't do it then I don't know who we should look forward to get assistance."

Reginio and Adelita Pook lost a son, David Daniel Pook - to murder in 1996. No one was convicted for that crime. Reginio Pook is a former police officer.
