Chetumal Paper Chides Chell’s Bus
posted (May 13, 2011)
The driver of a passenger bus from Belize was involved in an accident in Chetumal on Wednesday, and - according to one Mexican newspaper report - the residents of that border city say they are fed up with Belizean bus drivers who seem to have no regard for the rules of the road.

The accident happened at the intersection of Avenida Alvaro Obregon and Cecilio Chi, where a Chell's Blue Bird bus crashed into a taxi Wednesday morning. The incident happened at 11 in the morning when Elisha Lopez was driving this flagship Chell's Blue Bird bus, in the background of this photograph, with Belize license plates D1467.

According to the Revancha, a local Chetumal media website, Lopez was riding the bumper of 25 year old taxi driver Rogelio Canche Gilmer, and collided with the taxi at the busy intersection. Damage to the taxicab was minimal, but Mexican transit authorities were called to the scene to investigate. According to the Revancha, transit authorities agreed for the Chell bus driver to settle with the cab driver on hand, so as to restore the movement of traffic. Lopez was then allowed to continue his journey across the border. Interestingly, the article ends with an observation citing increasing concern on the part of Chetumal residents, who view Belizean bus drivers as posing a risk to their safety. The article calls for the Chetumal transit authority to provide Belizean bus drivers with driving courses that will teach them the rules of the road so as to avoid causing more accidents in their city.
