Smith Beats Second Murder Charge

Twenty nine year old Harrison Smith beat his second murder rap today when a jury of 7 women and 5 men found him not guilty of the murder of 47 year old Lionel "Sleepy" Welcome at the conclusion of is trial in the court of Justice Adolph Lucas. The jury deliberated for about 4 hours before it arrived at its verdict.

Smith was acquitted of the murder of Renato Logan in November, 2007. Logan was shot and killed in Taylor's Alley in February 2006.

Welcome was fatally stabbed in the left side of his chest on December 12, 2007, on Albert Street near to the Belize Bank. One witness, Lindon Sutherland, testified that he saw Smith riding on a bicycle come from the direction of water Lane on to Albert Street just before the stabbing.

Three police officers testified that they saw Welcome lying on the ground and Welcome told them that it was Harrison who stabbed him.

Smith testified and said that he was not at the scene when the incident occurred. Smith first went on trial for Welcome's murder in 2008 but that trial was aborted. Smith was represented by attorney Lionel Welch. Crown Counsel Talia Meighan Francis represented the prosecution.
