Belize Under 16 Team Heads To Mexico
posted (June 14, 2011)
But one team that does have the full sanction of the state is the Belize National Under 16 male Basketball team. That group left the country on Saturday for Mexico City to participate in the Centro Basket Under 16 Championship which starts tomorrow.

Six countries will be participating; they are: Belize, Costa Rica El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico and Puerto Rico. The teams that place first and second in the tournament will qualify for the FIBA Americas Under 16 Championship to be held in Cancun the following week. No Belizean selection - whether junior or senior - has ever managed to qualify for that elite tournament. It brings together all the best from the Americas including USA, Canada, Argentine, Brazil and Chile. So there's a lot of history riding on what happens in Mexico City starting tomorrow at 3:00 with the first game against Costa Rica.

The delegation includes Head Coach Matthew Smiling, Asst Coaches Fred Garcia and Fred Gabourel, Referee Karim Juan, and Manager Hugh Staine. The participation of the national team was made possible through the sponsorship of the Government of Belize, Belize Telemedia, Belize Natural Energy, and Belize Water Services.
