Boat Explodes At Caye Caulker, One Man Critical

There was a boat explosion in Caye Caulker village this afternoon around 2:30. Two men, 33 year old boat captain Coronel Brown and 23 year old boat assistant Jairo Reyes were injured. The men were rushed via air ambulance to the Municipal Airstrip in Belize City and from there they were taken to the emergency room at the Belize Medical Associates. The captain, Brown is reported to be in a critical condition.

The boat exploded a small distance away from the Caye Caulker Gas Depot today. The28 foot vessel is called Royal Palm Caye, property of Royal Palm Resort off Saint George's Caye.

Information is that the men had just refueled and were heading to pick up a guest when the boat experienced electrical problems and exploded. Police Corporal Ian Gevon spoke to the media about the men's injuries:

"One of the men received minors to his left foot, and the received extensive injuries, both this spinal and left side of his body. He has no movement on that side of his body. He also had severe injuries to his face and 1st and 2nd degree burns to his feet."

Coronel Brown was seriously injured while Reyes, who is a received lesser injuries.
