Sixth Cabbie Killed In Six Months
posted (June 16, 2011)
Last night another taxi man was killed in the city - the sixth cabbie killed since the end of December. Kevin Flowers was shot multiple times around midnight last night as he stood on Central American Boulevard.

There was no sign of robbery, so why did they kill him? Monica Bodden went looking for answers today:….

Monica Bodden Reporting
37 year old Taxi driver Kevin Flowers was murdered execution style in front of his taxi stand at the corner Central American boulevard and Fabers road.

Flowers who is a well-known taxi driver that has been in the business for many years -was standing between two parked cars around midnight last night - when two men rode up on separate bicycles and approached him.

One of the men began firing shots at point blank range - hitting him multiple times to his body.

According to many he received about 7 gunshot wounds.

Flowers was dead before he got to the hospital.

Rodwell Tasher, Friend
"Kevin was my friend but Kevin was a late night taxi man but last night I was asleep and waken up about a quarter to 1 o' clock by the sounds of gunshots but I didn't see anything."

Rowland Parks, Reporter
"The gunshots awoke you?"

Rodwell Tasher, Friend
"The gunshots awoke me. When I got up someone alert me that someone is dead out here. When I open my door there I saw my friend Kevin Flowers. What I did instantly was put him in a vehicle and took him to the hospital."

Rowland Parks, Reporter
"He was dead when you reach the hospital or?"

Rowland Parks, Reporter
"He was dead already."

Delise Flowers, Sister
"There is not much of an understanding. We just heard that he got shot. We went to the hospital, but he was already dead when we got there. WE understood that he got 7 shots; 2 in the head, 1 in the chest and one in the left or right hand - I am not sure. We understand he was standing by his car - his taxi, because he works the late night shift taxi."

"He has lost his house in the hurricane so in the day time he use to work on his house and so 10 o' clock in the night he goes out and try to run is taxi. He was a quiet and hardworking guy."

Flowers family told us - at no point did he mention anything to them about fearing for his life.

Delise Flowers, Sister
"He never told any of us that anybody was troubling him. We know of no one troubling him. We know that he is always at is house working. He had been working at the house for a long time because he had to remove all the rubbles that has fallen by himself and another brother and that took a long time. He tried to seek some assistance but he didn't get any so he takes his time and do a little bit every day. He didn't say anything about anyone bothering him."

The family is still unsure if robbery was a motive for his murder.

Delise Flowers, Sister
"The car was lock. We can't find the keys and we don't really know what it was. We don't know if he had cash on him, it could have been anything but we know that the shooting was close range. It seems like he was the target - the purpose is anybody bet. It just seems that now these days - who's next?"

Police have not established a motive at this point in their investigation.

Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer
"When a person who has not a regular run in with the law and then that person is just brutally murdered - it's rather hard to establish a motive. We have some persons detain that we are questioning that we believe maybe be able to help us in this investigation. When police arrive on the scene he was already transported to the hospital where he succumb to his injuries even before police got to the hospital."

Marion Alley, Reporter
"Which is the concern of his friend, Mr. Tasher is telling us that he calls the police several times and they took so long to respond to the scene."

Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer
"Marion, the response time - that's unfair for him to say but they actually had their own plan of action that they implemented. He was transported, police cannot really save your life on a scene but we try our best - if we get on the scene before the medical people who are train to do that - we try our best to preserve your life and so we try to rush you to the hospital. In most cases, in shooting incidents - when we get on the scene it's to investigate because the victim has already been transported."

Monica Bodden
"Now there is a surveillance camera just across the street. Is that in function?"

Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer
"Yes that's functioning. Actually we are hoping to use some of that - some of the surveillance from that to see how far we can get in the investigation."

Flowers - seen here in a 2008 story - was the father of two little girls and a little boy. He has been a taxicab driver for many years and worked the late night shift out at the taxi stand on Central American Boulevard. Last night he came on shift around 10 o'clock.

For a man with no police record who is known to be a family man and someone who keeps to himself, nothing comes to mind as to why someone would want to take his life.

Rowland Parks, Reporter
"Can you say if you observe where the bullets have hit your friend and to what parts of his body blood was coming from or so?"

Rodwell Tasher, Friend
"Personally when I was holding him in the vehicle I see one at the top of his eye. I never really see underneath his clothes but personally when I come out of the car and I was holding him in my lap the bullet that went above is eye came out through the back because there was blood in my hands when I was holding him at the back of his head."

Marion Alley, Reporter
"Ok, you say that this was your friend. You guys talk about anybody troubling him or anything."

Rodwell Tasher, Friend
"Kevin is not a person like that. He kept to himself that's why he runs late night taxi because he kept to himself. He does not like too much hearsay and I don't really know him as that to trouble anyone. He doesn't do violence and he was not in any gang."

Police have detained four persons for questioning….
