The Human Rights Commission of Belize has declared that the new anti-crime measures, from preventative detention to trial without a jury in certain cases, constitute an unjustifiable restriction of people's liberties and freedoms.
And now they are inviting the general public to a community meeting on Saturday at 2:00 to get educated on the new laws and to come up with counter proposals.

"The purpose of the meeting is to discuss with the community the proposed constitutional amendments and how it will affect them and their families, their community and their country. We also hope to discuss possible alternatives to these proposals and other ways in which we as the people - people in the community can think about crime fighting measures and possible ways that we can help the government think about combating crimes without restricting our liberties and freedoms and we think that the community has some solutions to crime but just hasn't have the opportunity to really present those. We are hoping that the surrounding community will come out. We are hoping that the mothers whose children are affected by this to come out."
Again the event is at the Cummerbatch field in Yabra at 2:00 on Saturday afternoon..
