Chamber Will Make Statement
posted (July 6, 2011)
The opposition may get its position on the Barrow nationalizations bolstered by a statement from the Chamber of Commerce which is being hammered out at an emergency meeting this evening.

We have seen a draft of that document and, among many other things, it calls on government to uphold and obey the rule of law in all respects and to uphold the freedom from arbitrary deprivation of private property.

It asks for the purpose of the acquisition to be the real, genuine and true intention of the acquisition with prompt, adequate and effective compensation to be determined and paid within one year from the date of acquisition.

At almost 600 words, the draft says a whole lot more - and not surprisingly, none of it in favour of nationalization. But, again, it is still a draft and the chamber started to meet at 5:30 to try and hammer out a final version.

And finishing up on the Telemedia re-nationalization, there's one bit of good news that we can't imagine either the opposition or the Chamber will complain about.

The Belize Communication Workers Union today signed an interim agreement with management. The agreement reflects new terms related to salary and benefit increases, as well as an increase in pension contributions.

The terms are retroactive for October first 2010 and will eventually be incorporated into a received collective agreement that both side have undertaken to complete within the nest 60 days.

As we understand it, Negotiations had been finalized a day before the Court of Appeal judgment came down, but things were stalled in the transition.
