Belize Courts Get Tough With Mexican
posted (July 7, 2011)
In February of this year, Corozal police arrested 35 year old Mexican national Jose Luis Beltran Robles for possession of more than twenty thousand US counterfeit dollars.

In addition, Robles was charged with the possession of a loaded .25 caliber pistol. The former Mexican Military officer pleaded guilty to both the gun and ammunition charges and was sentenced to two years each to be served concurrently. The counterfeit charges were dismissed against him. But in an effort to slip through a loophole in the law, Robles applied immediately for bail on the gun charges. He got it, but police held unto him.

After both public outcry and grave concerns expressed about the controversial rulings, the DPP applied to the Supreme court for a review of the lower court's rulings. Today, as a result of that appeal by the DPP, the Supreme Court handed down its ruling on the firearm and ammunition charges and increased Robles' sentencing from two to five years for each count, with the stipulation that the sentences are to run concurrently.

Robles' sentencing according to court guidelines should have reflected the new law on the books which dictate a minimum sentence of 5 years for the charges of firearms and ammunitions possession.

As a sidebar - that loophole in the system has been fixed with a recent law passed through the House of Representatives.
