BSI Meetings/Discussions Continue
posted (July 25, 2011)
On Friday afternoon in Belmopan, the Prime Minister met with representatives of Banco Atlantida, BSI and the Cane Farmers. The Prime Minister today told us that the meeting went well and on Wednesday he will meet with the factory workers. These are the folks that, in the main, represent the workers' trust, which own 81% of the company.

The Banco Atlantida bailout would require them giving up a portion of that ownership so that the Honduran bank would own controlling interests in BSI. The PUP's Northern Caucus held a Special Meeting on Saturday in Orange Walk to discuss the prospective sale of the employees' shares.

The Caucus calls on the Prime Minister to ensure that the majority shares of the BSI remain in the hands of Belizeans. The release points out that the more than 400 workers are owed approximately five million dollars in unpaid dividends. But the news from BSI that most of you all probably care about most is when will the sugar shortage be over and when will we start getting clean sugar? Well, The Ministry of Agriculture has appointed a Marketing Committee to make sure that white and brown sugar is available locally.

They will ensure that priority is put on supplying sugar to legitimate business operators and industrial users; and instructing BSI to stop the sale of sugar to distributors, wholesalers and retailers who refuse to submit sales records or whose sales records cannot satisfactorily account for the sale or distribution of sugar.

They will also be liaising with the Customs Department to identify and penalize those persons who are engaged in the illegal cross-border trade of sugar into Mexico and Guatemala.
