Belize City businessman slapped with abduction and attempted rape charges
posted (July 27, 2011)
Over the last three years, Belize City businessman Bert Vasquez has had more than a couple run-ins with the law. The twenty-seven year old has been charged in connection with at least three gun related incidents, two of which were deemed Aggravated Assault. Vasquez has been on remand since January, when he was charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault and one count of Unlawful Imprisonment. Things got a lot worse for Vasquez today after the charges against him were amended to include the additional offences of Abduction and Attempted Rape.

The victim, a twenty four year old woman, says she that on January twenty-fifth she was at the Pound Yard Bridge when Vasquez offered to give her a ride. But instead of taking her to her destination, the woman says Vasquez drove her to an isolated spot near Ladyville, put a knife to her throat and sexually assaulted her. The new charges are indictable offences so no plea was taken from Vasquez.

In a case of striking similarity, in May we reported that a sixteen year old girl had told police that she was at the Pound Yard Bridge when Vasquez pulled up and forced her to get into his car at gunpoint. The girl says Vasquez drove to an area near Vista del Mar, put the gun to her head and pulled the trigger but the gun misfired. She managed to get out of the car and call for help. That case has yet to be heard in court. As we noted earlier, Vasquez is currently on remand at Hattieville Prison.
