Galen Gives
posted (August 9, 2011)
When masters programme students at Galen were about to embark on their masters dissertation, they were given an option to instead start up a real company. And they decided to start up an NGO that gives students an opportunity to go to high school.

It's called GIVE, Galen Initiative for Valued Education, a non-profit initiative to provide deserving students with an all-costs covered secondary school scholarship.

We found out more at the launch today:

Jason Lamb - Galen MBA Program
"We decided to look at the actual way that we could give back to the Belizean Society. If we had come up with a company, we would be trying to figure out what to do with the profits, and so we decided to go in the direction of a non-profit organization, that would actually see us giving back to needy students, who we all know, there are many out there."

Cornelio Acosta - Galen MBA Program
"We're cognizant of the the fact that a lot of students are excelling at the primary school level, but when they reach a point that they need to make payments to high school, that is when we have a high drop out rate, as result of lack of financial assistance. So that is an important criteria for us also. We are looking for the best minds in Belize, and at the same time, seeing that the need the financial assistance."

Jason Lamb
"We are very cognizant of that fact. We have reviewed information on students, who when you read their situation, when you hear them speak, it only impresses on your hear to want to reach out and try to give back something. Sometimes it wants bring tears to your eyes. We did some research, and we know that it's approximately around $5,000 in terms of tuition and fees to put a student through highschool."

Cornelio Acosta
"Well currently, we're look - being that it's a start - we're looking at sponsoring two students, and also, we're looking at the possibility of assisting many others. These two students who we're looking at, we're looking to put them through the 4 years of highschool, also doing assistance, when it comes to books, uniforms, and any other expenses that may come about, as a result of that."

Jason Lamb
"We want to look at the business community, time and time again. We want to look at the Belizean Society to look at a program like this, and do what you can. We'd rather see potential students in school, or bright minds in school, than to see them on the streets or at home because they can't afford to go to high school. They can't afford to get an education that we all have been able to achieve."

No students have been chosen yet...
