Western Corridor Landfill Being Prepped

If you've driven past mile 24 on the western highway recently, you would've noticed the road works going on at what will be the new regional sanitary landfill.

The construction of a 3.35 kilometer Access Road to the Landfill is complete - but that's about all that's finished.

Physical works at the site to prepare the first cell for the reception of solid waste are expected to start in February of next year, so, while the road may beckon, don't go there, because the Landfill HAS NOT been built and is NOT operational.

Bids for the infrastructure works will be submitted on September 28th, of this year.

The landfill is a four year project to improve solid waste management in the west of the country: from San Pedro and Caye Caulker, to Belize City and San Ignacio/Santa Elena.

It will mean the closure of open dumpsites in all those municipalities and instead those dumps will be turned into way-stations for garbage heading to the mile 24 landfill.

And this new site won't be just another dump - or at least, it shouldn't be - the standards for the new Landfill were developed based on the guidelines stipulated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

Ultimately, the funding agencies will have to verify and validate that the landfill meets those standards. A community advisory group will also be formed...
