Streets Named After Nurses
posted (August 10, 2011)
The Belize City Council named another tranche of streets today. This time, they honoured nurses, public and police officers who have more than 35 years of service.

Nurse Lilian Gibson, 94 years old and still very sharp, is one of them. She is a worthy recipient, but as you might expect of someone born in 1917, very humble about the recognition:

Lilian Gibson - Getting a street named after her
"We were bedside nurses. We used to wash, dose, and clean, and it was a disgrace if you had a patient with a bed sore. We used to have to work very hard."

Mayor Zenaida Moya
"A number of these individuals, they sit here and they are not only nurses, you know. They extend themselves ever more to the community, serving so selflessly. And often, persons they serve selflessly, and at very distinguished positions, as well, but they are not honored."

Jules Vasquez
"How do you feel to get this honor that now, they will have a Lilian Gibson Street?"

Lilian Gibson
"Well, these things happen in life, you know. I am not surprised."

Jules Vasquez
"So then, you didn't enter for fame, but now you're famous. You have a street."

Lilian Gibson
"Yes, I don't what's passed remain passed. Let the dead past bury it's dead, we below, and God overhead."

Mayor Zenaida Moya
"It is extremely rewarding just to see the smiles on these nurses' faces, in this case also, Mr. Gilbert Tablada - Ex Sergeant Gilbert Tablada, Councilor Wayne Usher. It's certainly a pleasure."

150 streets have been named and there a hundred more to be named. Future street names will come from athletes, artisans and others.
