Vinegar With Village Verve!
posted (August 15, 2011)
Vinegar - it's used in every household - but now a gourmet version of this household fixture is being produced in Belize. It's the work of the women form the Valley Community in the Stann Creek district. Last week in Hope Creek Village 30 women celebrated the honing of their skills - after weeks of refining their recipes and coming up with vinegar that adds spice to this age old concoction.

The press office found out more.

Trainer
"The past few months we've been training. We started out with a lot of informational sessions about what we would be going through and how we would be making vinegar. We work with Mr. Bacab and other people who are handling our foods handlers permit so we could handle and create a product the legitimate way. We spent several days a week for the past two months here creating vinegar from scratch with the guidance of Mr. Bacab and Michelle Irving."

Reporter
"So how will you use this in the future for the benefit of others?"

Trainer
"I work with the women's group from Hummingbird Community and together we will continue to come and create the vinegar here and grow a market hopefully in local stores and gain the support from local Belizeans in our product and then maybe to outsiders, maybe to visitors - it would be a great product to sell to tourists that come in and have something that is locally made by women and just really empower ladies in Belize to improve their livelihood and crate an income for themselves."

Participant
"I always believe that you should live until you die trying to learn something and I always try to learn and not to put it aside. As long as there is an income to make - I'll be there."
