Author: Students Needs To Be Business-Minded
posted (August 23, 2011)
Studies show that fair percentage Belizean students need help with general literacy skills. And indeed, while reading and writing are central to any education - what about reading the fine print of a hire purchase contract, or a mortgage? That's financial literacy and judging by the number of foreclosures and hard pay stars that are printed in the papers weekly - many Belizean adults are lacking in it.

And that's why Sharryn Dawson has written a book called Money Basic for kids. She's a graduate of the University of the West Indies school of business and finance and told us why it's important for kids to learn about money from early on:...

Sharryn Dawson, Author
"Essentially the book is about empowering children to be financial literate and also empowering children to understand the world of entrepreneurship and also the world of work, but basically giving the entrepreneurship as a viable option to the child as he or she continues to grow and develop."

Jules Vasquez
"How important is it that we change the construct and we put the import about learning about finance at an early age?"

Sharryn Dawson, Author
"Well, the thing that is important in understanding is when we attempt to do it as adults we end up rehabilitating ourselves. When we do it at the level of the child we are in their developmental phase, where we can actually tap into their cultural bringing, the way have been raised which will help to cultivate into being that financially responsible adult in the long run. In a case of Belize I know we have a lot of foreclose homes. In the case of the United States, a lot of foreclose homes, this is a concept about mortgage, and how to handle your personal finance, and it trickles down to your wellbeing - your livelihood, basically whether or not you have a house today or a shelter tomorrow. This is how much your finance and your education in finance is affecting your life now, and that's why the education is so critical."

After her studies Dawson also worked as an Investment Advisor at an investment bank in Jamaica.
