posted (September 9, 2011)
The Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Hol Chan Marine Reserve Board of Trustees has started a programme to award four scholarships per year.

Three are for the high school level and one is for the university level to study Natural Resource Management with emphasis on marine science at the University of Belize.

As the planners told us, it's an opportunity for Belizean students to be engaged in marine natural resource management.

Miguel Alamilla - Manager - Hol Chan Marine Reserve
"Well, management of our marine resources is very important to ensure that we are managing our resources in a sustainable manner, and we need well-educated professionals to be able to do that. So we are investing in young Belizeans for them to be able high school and a university, and acquire the knowledge to be good resource managers."

Hon. Rene Montero - Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries
"We feel that there are not too many trained marine biologists out there, so hence the reason for creating this funds - to train our future leaders who will take over the marine resources of our country."

The first university level scholarship recipient is Salvador Nigel Mesh who will study for two years to obtain a Bachelor's Degree.

Mesh is from San Antonio Village, in the Cayo District.
