Positive Youths Recognized
posted (September 13, 2011)
Too often, the news is about wayward youths who've engaged in illegal activity. But to sort of balance things out, today the Ministry of Education & Youth along with Youth for the Future held the Belize Youth Awards. 20 young people from across the country who have had positive impact on their peers and in their communities received awards. We found out more:

Christine Smith, Director, Youth for the Future
"Its young people who have been doing positive within their communities. They are honored in 13 different categories; youth and sports, youth and media and entrepreneurship, youth and environment, person who is living with disability, the pay setters' award, and the youth ministers award. As part of the media Jules you know what we see about young people are not the positives. We see all the negatives but the truth is the percentage of you people who are doing wrong in the community is very small. But yet the focus is always on them. This is a way of shifting the focus to the group that is actually doing the positives and recognizing them for the roll that they are playing in contribution to the development of their communities and the country. What we have to realize is that in any society you will have good and bad and we have to put more effort on recognizing the good and if we can encourage young people to step up and be a part of the good that is in their society and take responsibility, because Belize is not just for the adults, it's for the young people as well and they have to start contributing from the onset because they are not going to be positive citizens if they are not putting it into practice during their teenage years".

And from the youths to the leaders, when we come back we'll tell you why Manuel Esquivel, Said Musa and Dean Barrow are all going to be sitting down together tomorrow night.
