In 2005, we told you about Lieutenant Rogelio Ramirez the first BDF soldier to receive training as a Kaibil, which is the Guatemalan special force.
Well, tonight, there is another. Lieutenant Rene Cavanas returned to Belize yesterday after completing an eight week intensive Kaibil course in Poptun, Peten Guatemala.
Lt. Cavanas is only the second BDF soldier to participate in the training and he excelled by placing third in his graduating class.
He wasn't the only non-Guatemalan, the course had the participation of Mexico, Panama, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Honduras and Belize.
26 year old Cavanas was born in Corozal and has been in the BDF for six years where he is a platoon commander.
He has trained at the El Salvador Armed Forces Military Academy as well as the Jungle Warfare instructor course in French Guiana.
