Police Make Multiple Detentions In Urbina Extortion Scheme
posted (December 8, 2011)
Orange Walk Police have detained a number of suspects as possible players in an extortion scheme targeting the Chendo Urbina family in Ornage Walk.

On Sunday night after 6:00, Rosendo "Chendo" Urbina Junior and his wife Rebecca were held at gunpoint by a group of five armed, masked men wearing camouflage as they left the plush family compound at honey Camp Lagoon in the Orange Walk district. They were held hostage for an unspecified time, where the men threatened them and demanded money - reports say as much as a million US dollars.

But, while they were intimidating, police say the men also seemed disorganized - and eventually they stole Urbina's vehicle - and - according to police left with nothing else.

But they did take Urbina Jr's phone number - and started to make calls demanding money. Police advised the family to refuse the extortion. But still, sacred for their safety the entire family left the country en-masse yesterday - fleeing to Houston. No word yet on what effect if any this will have on the political career of Chendo Urbina Senior, the Belizean ambassador to Mexico and UDP Standard Bearer for Orange Walk South.

The Urbina's Honey Camp Lagoon House is on a massive, sprawling compound, visible from above on Google earth. The compound - - which has a huge fence, as we understand it, was not breached but the men waited for the couple outside.

As we understand it, the men who have been detained are all from Orange Walk - but police have said they have to look at the possibility that it could be a trans-national crime.
