Stole Handcuffs; Put Behind Bars

A man who stole a pair of police handcuffs was today sentenced to one year in jail. 22 year old construction worker, Aaron Paquil escaped lawful custody on September 29th, 2010 at the Mahogany street Police sub-station, while he was being detained regarding an investigation into a case of aggravated assault.

Paquil was not arrested and charged until the following month, when he was detained by police in connection with another incident. The pair of handcuffs has a value of 50 dollars, and it was the property of the government of Belize.

Paquil was sentenced to six months for the theft of the handcuffs and six months for escaping lawful custody. Magistrate Ann Marie Smith who imposed the sentences, stipulated that they are to run consecutively, meaning he will serve a total of one year.
