PUP Candidate Mahler Is Out, He's In, He's...
posted (January 30, 2012)
On Friday night we reported that PUP Candidate in Caribbean Shores Anthony Mahler had suddenly resigned - citing personal reasons. But then, last night news surfaced which made it seem that all he really needed was a weekend off. The PUP Caribbean Shores Committee held a well-attended meeting with Mahler yesterday where basically they begged him to say on. As we understand it, the meeting was emotional with supporters expressing their steadfast commitment to his candidacy.

This morning, the Committee even sent out a release saying it does not recognize his resignation letter because the committee did not receive any letter from him, and as far as they are concerned he remains the standard bearer for the PUP in the Shores. And with that, the word went out that, indeed, Mahler was back under the big blue candidate's tent.

But tonight we can confirm that he is not. He told us as much via text message this afternoon, and half an hour ago, the party officially confirmed it.

PUP headquarters sent out a release saying that Party Leader Francis Fonseca and Chairman Henry Usher met with Mahler today to give him the opportunity to reconsider his decision. But, late this evening, Mahler got back to them saying that he had consulted and carefully thought over his position but was standing by his decision to resign as standard bearer for personal reasons. The party says that the process of selecting a new Standard Bearer will begin immediately.

And, as we understand it, there is no shortage of prospective candidates. We've confirmed that Luke Espat - former owner of the Port has been calling around asking for support - and best indications are that he is very interested in the job. That would be interesting because Espat is now firmly against the Ashcroft Alliance - which foreseeably the PUP will be trying try to court for support in the upcoming elections, as he is believed to have played a pivotal role in campaign financing in every general election since at least 1993.
