Earlier in the newscast you saw PUP Party Leader Francis Fonseca express his hope that the party's vacancy in the Lake Independence division will be filed as seamlessly as it was in the Caribbean Shores division.
That's because the PUP got Dr. David Hoy to fill in for Anthony Mahler who resigned as standard-bearer a week ago.
Hoy is well known for his work as an ophthalmologist, but he's a newcomer to the political machine.
With only four and a half weeks to go before the general election he's at a distinct disadvantage to his opponent Santino Castillo who has been on the ground, rolling hard since November.
But today Hoy told us that he can't worry about all that; he simply has to put his head down and physically immerse himself in the division - with support of his predecessor and the constituency chairperson:..

"Anthony asked me if I would accept the challenge to take over Caribbean Shores and I accepted."

"You accepted why?"
Dr. David Hoy
"I am a PUP, and in a situation of crisis and deciding that it is maybe my time to serve, I maybe naively in a crazy manner, but I felt that I should say yes and I did."
Jules Vasquez
"What is your priority going forward in terms of how do you establish a presence in the division in just four and a half weeks?"
Dr. David Hoy
"That is the difficult part. The plan is this; it's going to be almost impossible to physically be in every house in the next four and a half weeks. I will try my very best to physically do as much as I can in those areas; giving each area a week and then go over the entire Caribbean Shores in the last week from a physical point of view."

"Do you foresee that you will be able also to win? You are facing a candidate who is apparently not short on funding resources, who has been on the ground, who has the machinery of the Perdomo campaign and his own machinery as well. Santino Castillo is formidable. Will you be able to win in Caribbean Shores?"
Dr. David Hoy
"Jules, whenever I get into something - and as you all know Santi is my friend - it's not about Santi per se or myself. When we are in something like this, I do it like I do everything else. It's all about getting to the people and having the people get to meet me."
"There is something in human beings seeing somebody else; they will decide then, 'I'll give this man a chance.'"

"I know Anthony says that he stepped down for personal reasons, but I have spoken to persons who say they spoke to him and they understand that he felt like he didn't have enough money. He wasn't receiving enough money from the party to run an effective campaign against a well resourced opponent."
"Is this a problem that you foresee having? Are you aware of this problem?"
Dr. David Hoy
"I am the standard bearer. Anthony is the campaign manager. I can't foresee that as a problem."
Jules Vasquez
"How will this work? Will a convention be setup or will there just be an endorsement? I know Luke Espat has indicated that he was interested at some point in running."
Dr. David Hoy
"I think there is no more to talk about Caribbean Shores in terms of who will be the standard bearer. I am the standard bearer and Anthony Mahler is the campaign manager and his dad is the chairman of the committee. We are working together."
Jules Vasquez
"I didn't know that you can be installed as standard bearer. Have you been installed? Have you taken an oath? How does it work?"
"I'm just trying to see because for perspective voters they will say 'if you've short cut this, what wouldn't you shortcut?'"
Dr. David Hoy
"When we look at situations like this, I am on the ground in the last two days. The other procedures that you are talking about could happen like you came to me today and in half an hour you were here and we are doing an interview. I might be called in another half hour to do exactly what you are doing. All of this thing is like preparing for a hurricane that is coming."

"With the significant disadvantages that you have particularly in terms of time, are you courting yourself into a situation where you have to be prepared to some extent to lose?"
Dr. David Hoy
"Jules, you know the poem "if"? There is one section in that poem that says 'victory and defeat are both imposters' so when you look at anything, it's going to be an imposter. I think if I am in there as I am, genuinely telling them my truth. I have to only be David, I can't try to be a politician that I am not or try to say the correct words to people. I can only come across as who I am, and if that is going to take me through, I am going to win."
