And Who's Out Of The Blue For The Lake?
posted (February 17, 2012)
But the important question right now - particularly for Lake Independence voters - is who will run for the PUP in that division that has gone from a sure seat to a veritable jack in the box.

Well, after the Schakron decision, the PUP scrambled to come up with a new candidate in a pinch - since nomination closed at 4:00 pm.

They did not pick Carlos Diaz who was nominated as an independent candidate.

They went instead with Schakron's brother Martin Galvez - Galvez who met with PUP Party Leader, Francis Fonseca and got the Party's endorsement this afternoon. Galvez says he is well known in Lake - I, though not as celebrated as his sister, and that he will continue where she left off:

Jim McFadzean
"She is a well-known activist. She's left the race, and you are replacing her. Are you going to bring to the race the same passion that she was bringing to this race for the same causes? Are you going to be fighting and representing the same causes she was representing with the same passion?"

Martin Galvez - PUP Candidate, Lake I
"Well, I was always behind her and giving her all my support from since she started Belizeans For Justice after my son was killed, and all the injustices we saw. It came to light then; we know that the injustices will always be happening, but it never touched us the way that it did when I lost my son. And I will fight for the people of Lake I and fight for the people of Belize."

Jim McFadzean
"Do you believe that you are going to get the same sort of support that Yolanda was getting from her supporters?"

Martin Galvez
"Well, I want to believe so. I want to believe that I would get the same support from the people who are about love. The love will continue, and I am well-known in the area also. I'm just not a person who is always around, but I'm always helping people, and I don't ask for any big applause when I do something. Anybody who knows Martin Galvez will know that I am a very honest, sincere, hard-working and very kind person. That is what I'm bringing to the PUP. I don't drink or smoke, and I'm always of a sober mind. I don't have a police record, and nobody can say anything bad about me."

Shortly after that interview, we gather, there were some fisticuffs at the Galvez's Conch shell bay residence when UDP brother Mario Galvez visited.

If he looks familiar, it's because Martin Galvez is the father of the slain Chris Galvez - whose death first thrust his sister Yolanda into the national spotlight.

The unassuming Galvez is a part of modern political history - as he becomes the first person in modern political history to assume a position as standard bearer for a mass party just one hour before the end of nomination and just two and a half weeks before the general election.
