After Shakeup, Social Security Still Making Appearances
posted (March 1, 2012)
Belize's Social Security Board may have gone through a senior shake-up recently, but it's putting its best foot forward to host a regional meeting.

The Council of Social Security Institutions in Central America and the Dominican Republic (CISSCAD) held its 33rd ordinary meeting today in Belize. The highlight was the formal handing over of the Presidency of the CISSCAD from Panamá to Acting Chief Officer of the Belize Social Security Board, Leticia Vega.

The member countries will be developing a work plan to execute the CISSCAD's Strategic Plan 2012-2016 under the theme "Advancing social security through integration and collaboration." Former President Marlon de Souza talked about some of the objectives:

Marlon De Souza - Deputy Director General, SSI Panama
"It's a Central American, Dominican Republic effort to make the corporation more stable, to reach more people of the country. We need to look forward to help these other countries to increase the coverage so that we could reach all, or almost all, of the people of one of each of the countries which are part of the CISSCAD."

Leticia Vega - Acting CEO, SSB
"One of the main items happened this morning in the agenda, and that is the pro-temporary presidency, being transferred from Panama to Belize. The presidency goes from country to country in alphabetical order of the member of countries and it's for a 2-year term. So, from Panama it's moving on to Belize. They come together in the spirit of integration and cooperation, they develop what they call partnerships in trying to meet their strategic plan. One of the areas has to do with the increase in coverage of social protection, social security and health in the region. So, in that area we are going to develop projects and cooperation and capacity building in how we can increase our coverage."

Belize has been a member since 2005, and the presidency will last for two years.
