Armed Robbery In Placencia Forces Bar-owner To Close Down
posted (March 13, 2012)
Police have been holding it down - but Placencia has witnessed a few too many unreported robberies for residents and business owners.

But this one is being reported: On Saturday night at around 10, Mango's Restaurant and Bar, which is located in the Maya Beach Area of Placencia, was robbed.

Today, 7News spoke to the establishment's owner, Frank Da Silva, a 56 year-old Canadian businessman, who had just been released from the hospital for a gunshot injury he received during the robbery.

He asked to speak to us off camera, but he told us that 2 dark complexioned men entered the business place and ordered 4 four beverages.

When he handed them over the men opened two of them, giving him the impression that they were legitimate customers. A few minutes later, one of the men used one of the drinks to club one of his customers in the back of his head, which cued the other to pull out a firearm.

The man armed with the firearm started threatening one of his other guests in an attempt to convince Da Silva to hand over the establishment's earnings.

He said that when he was in the process of complying, the men attempted to rob another of his guests of their personal belongings, and that's when he reached for his concealed, licensed firearm.

Da Silva only managed to point it at the assailant, who then shot him immediately as he saw the firearm. He suffered a wound to the right side of his abdomen, and this commotion allowed the men to escape with approximately a little more than $1000.

Da Silva told us that he opened the establishment about a year and 4 months ago, and in that time, his establishment has been burglarized 2 times before this last robbery. Now, with this latest terrifying event, he has chosen to shut down the establishment, because quote, "a life is not worth it."
