Bike Rally For Women's Month
posted (March 14, 2012)
It may have gotten lost in all the election hype and post-election reconstruction, but it's women's month and one of the centerpiece events is the annual Women's Bike Rally.

It is scheduled for this Saturday in Belize City at the corner of Western Avenue and the Western Highway. We found out more about it today:

Icilda Humes - Director, Women's Department
"As you may all know, March is Women's Month. In Belize, we are perhaps the only country to have designated an entire month to celebrate International Women's Day, which is actually celebrated on March 8. And on an annual basis, we plan activities countrywide, along with other government agencies and civil society partners to celebrate the achievements of women to recognize them for all the hard work that they continue to do throughout our country. This weekend, we are going to be having our annual bike rally, which is an activity that will be happening in each of the districts at different venues. So we encourage people to contact our offices in each district to find out more about the respective bike rallies that will be happening on Saturday. In Belize City, we continue to try to attract more people to really engage in healthy living. And so, we continue to ask families, work colleagues, and friends who hang out together to come out as a group, and to be a part of the bike rally that takes place this Saturday from the corner of the Western Avenue and Western Highway. We will start at 6 o'clock - on time. Those of you who have participated over the years know that we do start on time, and we really want to encourage people to come out well before 6 o'clock - or at least if they want to be entered into the post bike rally raffle. We then encourage them to come out and register, because once you participate, you get a free raffle ticket, and at the end of the ride, we an opportunity to share with the riders an incentive for coming out early on a Saturday morning, and for really taking part in a health family activity. We continue to be very grateful to business community. We will not complain at all. Year after year, the business community continues to be very generous with us for Women's Month."

The bike rally is not a race. Registration starts at 5:00 a.m. and the ride commences at 6:00 a.m.

The theme for women's month is "Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures".
