Walk For A Special Cause
posted (March 19, 2012)
Today folks were lined up in front of Stella Maris School with the hopes of receiving a pair of tennis shoes.

This is part of the One World Running initiative which brings awareness for Special Olympics. 1000 pairs of tennis shoes were donated by runners and brought down to Belize where they were distributed.

All the students in Stella Maris received a pair of shoes, and the rest are being distributed throughout the country. Michael Sandrock, an American journalist and founder of the initiative told us more about the project.

Michael Sandrock
"This is our annual "One World Running Special Olympics Belize Run." What we did was brought all these shoes down with students from Ohio State University and you can see them over here. They are on their spring break."

"We brought these shoes with us; about 1,000 pairs of shoes. Rodwell Lino, with Special Olympics makes registration, people get a free pair of shoes and on Wednesday morning at 6am there is a big run right here at Stella Maris School."

"We want to just promote the idea of health, fitness and wellness. Doing a community run, so it's not really a competitive race, we do have fast runners, but it's a community run. Anyone can go. It can be a teacher, parent, kid, t6he idea is to build a community by coming out with your friends and peers and also to recognize Special Olympics for what they do and also just to promote the idea that we are one world. It's called "One World Running" and we are all one world; we have to help the world out and each other."

Elodia Bautista, National Director - Special Olympics - Belize
"Anyone can participate. We invite everyone to come and be part of it whether you got tennis or not. Whether you are here to come and participate. We have the children participating; we have Lion's Club participating with us. We have Coca Cola participating with us and other students from other high schools."

"Everyone can join us. Just be here Wednesday at 6am and you can run with us."

The run begins Wednesday morning at 6:00 a.m. at Stella Maris School, swings around the circular and end at Stella Maris.
