PUP Files Election Petition
posted (March 22, 2012)
The PUP today filed the election petition for Yolanda Schakron. As we've reported, Schakron was disqualified as a candidate on nomination day when Returning Officer, Noreen Fairweather, ruled that she was ineligible to run because she holds dual nationality. Well, the PUP's position is that only a Supreme Court Judge could have decided that so they want the result of the election overturned.

The Party's Communication Director Lisa Shoman - doing double duty as its attorney - made the filing this morning and 7news was at the registry when she finished.

Here's what she told us:..

Jules Vasquez
"What was filed this morning?"

Senator Lisa Shoman
"The election petition for and on behalf of Yolanda Schakron for the Lake Independence division."

Jules Vasquez
"What do you feel is the strength of the petition?"

Senator Lisa Shoman
"It's very strong. This election petition has to do with the fact that the nominating on nomination day, the nominating officer refuses to allow Yolanda Schakron's name to be on the ballot."

Jules Vasquez
"You all are saying this should be arbitrated by a judge?"

Senator Lisa Shoman
"It should have been decided by an election judge in terms of the objection. Her role on that day is to allow the names on the ballot. If there is a problem with the nomination paper then she is allowed to make a decision, but a decision as to who is qualified or not qualified really has to do with an election judge."

Jules Vasquez
"If such a petition were to be successful it would have apt end the entire outcome in that constituency that she has wished to contest."

Senator Lisa Shoman
"The outcome that we would be looking for is to hold a bi-election."

The party intends to file at least three more election petitions.
