Accused Scotiabank Robber Gets Off Murder Charge
posted (March 27, 2012)
Late yesterday morning, 23 year-old Frank Edwards was acquitted of murder in the Western Session of the Supreme Court. Edwards was one of 4 men accused of committing the deadly robbery of the Scotia Bank branch in Spanish Lookout on March 30, 2010.

The robbers were able to escape with approximately $300,000 in cash, while killing the 32 year-old KBH Security Guard, Steven Rudolph Lopez.

Edwards was the man charged for that murder, but he was not caught in Belize; Guatemalan authorities picked him up in the Santa Elena area of Guatemala.

His caution statement to police was the only piece of evidence Crown Counsel Cecil Ramirez had to link him to the murder of Lopez, but it was ruled inadmissible by trial judge Troadio Gonzalez.

Edwards told the court that he was beaten by police who also tortured him with electricity and pushed a firearm as far down his throat as it would go. According to him, it was under those conditions that he gave the statement just so that the police would stop brutalizing him.

The medical officer who examined Edwards was also called to the stand and she gave evidence, which corroborated Edwards' story.

When Justice Gonzalez ruled that the statement is not admissible, Crown Counsel Ramirez indicated to the court that he had no further evidence to present against Edwards. Justice Gonzalez then directed the jury to find Edwards not guilty of murder, and Edwards walked free of this charge.

It is important to note that he still has pending charges of robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery for which he has not been tried as yet.

This 2010 robbery was sensational for several reasons. Firstly, the Scotia Bank Branch is located right next to the Police Station.

Second, in the days to come later, the former commissioner of police, Crispin Jeffries, told the media at the famous April 1, 2010 press conference that there was a ring of corrupt police officers who had a hand in this robbery and the March 16, 2010 robbery of the Social Security Branch in Belize City.

Those allegations eventually fizzled out because there was only one police officer who was charged - and he got off those charges. And one more note, two other men accused in this crime, Alexander Edwards and Benjamin Peters were caught in Honduras and executed by police there.
