Man Pretending To Be Parent Robbed the "Y"
posted (March 28, 2012)
At the top of the newscast, we told you about the classroom invasion at ITVET. The robbers went in posing as students. And that led us back to the YWCA - which is just down the street from ITVET.

As we reported last night, that school was robbed on Monday morning. The interesting part is that the assailant posed as a parent going to pay his child's school fee. But he was in fact, an armed robber and got away with over 2 thousand dollars in cash and cheques. Today we stopped in at the Y - where we were told that they are working on stepping up security measures.

Sonia Linarez - General Secretary, YMCA
"On Monday morning, someone came into our office and held up our finance officer. He demanded money using a gun, and she hand over the amount that we had that she was about to prepare for a deposit at the bank."

Monica Bodden
"And what was that amount?"

Sonia Linarez
"It was a little over $2,000 in cash and checks."

Monica Bodden
"And what time did this happen?"

Sonia Linarez
"This happened at about 8:45 or so. We had received some donations and collections of fees, and that's when he decided to come up pretending that he was a parent who came to pay school fees."

Monica Bodden
"Are you guys planning on taking any security measures to avoid such an incident from reoccurring?"

Sonia Linarez
"Yes, we have had several meetings and friends have offered to come in with us, sit down, and see how we can strategize in putting in features that will help us to avoid such occurrences in the future. It's unfortunate though because we do have - as you see, to enter, you had to be buzzed in. So by him posing as a parent, the officer was unaware that he was a thief, and so she buzzed him in. So, we are hoping that something like this does not occur in the near future. It has been very traumatic for the staff, and we didn't believe that someone would even venture to walk up, at least at at that time of the day. So, we'll do whatever is in our power. The management of the 'Y' will work towards avoiding such an occurrence in the near future."

Over the weekend the YWCA held its open house and sports day. The organization would like the public to know that the proceeds from that function were not a part of the stolen monies.
