Hattieville Family of 7 Homeless
posted (March 30, 2012)
Tonight, a family of 7 from Hattieville is homeless after their two storey wooden home burnt down this afternoon. They lost everything - and they told Robin Schaffer that it all started when they were cooking beans on a fire hearth - and a piece of firewood fell:..

Robert Usher, fire victim
"Piece of the firewood dropped on the floor, and no one noticed it, and that's how it started. I didn't even know because I was resting. It was when she came then she alerted me and told me that the house was under fire."

"When I got up I got a hammer and started to whap the wall where the fire was. The wall came down on me; I didn't know that it was already spreading. I thought that if I whap out the wall then the fire would not spread to other parts of the house."

"But I had to run out the way because when that heat jumped in my face, it nearly killed me. I had to run out the way. I started to get the children out and some of the things that I could have saved."

Robin Schaffer
"Where are you guys going to stay tonight?"

Robert Usher, fire victim
"We don't have anywhere to stay, but at the same time, we will try to do something here until we get more assistance. We lost about nearly $90,000.00 because I had a lot of tools here. This was a workshop. I had skill saw, band saw, table saw and other machines that got burned inside there."

The family is asking for help and today a collection was being gathered at the village speedbump. If you'd like to help the family whose losses are in the tens of thousands, you can call the family at 631-7545.
