Pregnant Woman Denied Bail; Family Asking For Help
posted (April 5, 2012)
A distraught family has been left concerned and confused after a back and forth with the courts over their jailed pregnant daughter. Stacey Humes is a 30 year old woman who, according to her family, has been denied bail without any explanation. It all started with a domestic dispute with her common law husband in September of last year. Humes had a restraining order against her, and she violated it. We spoke with her mother who wished to appear off camera, and she outlined some of the challenges her daughter has been facing.

Mother of Stacey Humes
"She never knew that there was a restraining order for her. She went to the house one day and he choked her; she picked up a brush and threw it at him."

"All of that she was trying to explain to the magistrate in court, but they didn't want to hear her story. When I went to the court they told me to go to the station. When I went to the station they told me to go back at court. They have me up and down."

"I took food to her about after 5 at the station. The officer only took the water; they didn't take clothes nor the blankets that I brought for her. She told me that the cell is cold."

"She is pregnant. She is not feeling well. They called me the other day and told me that they brought her to the hospital. But by the time I got here they already took her back. It looks like she was having a miscarriage because she is worrying about the situation."

"It's her first offence. She didn't kill anyone. She doesn't have a record."

"So the children are left without a mother right now?"

Mother of Stacey Humes
"Yes, today her daughter was telling me that she wants her mother to come out. She asked me that if she goes to visit her in the prison, will they let her out. I told her that I don't know, just pray."

Ortencia Richard, Aunt
"If the court could just inform us of why she cannot get bail. Every time she goes to the court they revoke the bail."

"This morning I was at court and I ask the police officer if she is on bail. They said yes, she is on $750 bail and a surety of the same amount. I went back to see if I could get bail for her and when I came back my sister told me that the bail was revoke." "Her brother in law went to bail her and a police officer told the brother in law to get from in front the court because he has nothing to do with the court. He was there to bail Stacey."

The family adds that one of the charges against their daughter is failure to appear in court, but she was unable to appear because she was in prison at the time.
