Drunk Driver Remanded After Killing Hattieville Resident

A Hattieville resident was killed by a drunk driver on Saturday night.

Around 8:30 on Saturday night, Dean Smith, a 33 year old Belizean Fisherman of Hattieville village, was riding his bicycle on the Western Highway when he was run over by a Black and Grey Mitsubishi Montero SUV being driven by Julian Martinez, a 32 yr old Belize City Mechanic.

Smith was found lifeless, lying face down on the right side of the road with head and body injuries.

Police have since arrested and charged Martinez with Driving A Motor Vehicle without due care and attention, Manslaughter by Negligence, Causing Death by Careless Conduct and Driving A Motor Vehicle with Alcohol Concentration above the Prescribed Limit. Martinez was arraigned in the Magistrate's Court today. The prosecutor informed the court the matter will be treated as indictable, so Martinez was not eligible for bail. As a result, Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith remanded him until May 28, his next court date. And on Sunday a child was killed in a traffic accident. This time it happened in in Corozal where around 4:00 in the afternoon, Luis Tzul, a 20 year old Belizean Fisherman, was driving his black Ford pickup in front of Noe Bar on North Front Street in Sarteneja Village. A 1 year old child, Bryden Chan, ran across the road in front of the vehicle, Tzul could not stop and he ran her over.

The child received head and body injuries and died on the spot. As a result, the vehicle was impounded, and the body awaits post mortem examination.
