False Imprisonment By Fake Police
posted (April 13, 2012)
A 19 year old Belize city resident had a crazy encounter with a man pretending to be a police officer. It happened at a few minutes to midnight on Wednesday. Mike Smith was in front of the Princess Hotel and Casino when he was approached by Reginald Wagner who took out something resembling a "Police Badge" and then put a gun in his back.

Today Smith told us that it got much crazier after that:..

Daniel Ortiz
"This is an extremely strange story with a lot of gaping holes from the information we received from the police."

"In your own words tell us what took place."

Mike Smith
"I was at Princess on Saturday night at 12:45 am. A dark skin complexion man was 12 feet away from me; I realized it was Reginald, a person that I knew. He came up to me and told me not to say anything. He told me to hand him all my money. I gave him my black touch screen phone that is valued $200 plus. He took $200 from me also and after that he told me to follow him to his house. He told me that if I ran he will shoot me."

"He took me on Marine Parade and then to his house on Daly Street where he tie me up. He starts to punch me and ask me about some information about different things. He tortured me. He told me that he is a police officer; he showed me a silver crown and said that he will lock me up. He said that he would kill me if I reported the incident to the police."

"He took me at his aunt's house in the Port Loyola area where he continued to search me. He showed me a black hand gun."

Daniel Ortiz
"This is, like I said there are a lot of details missing. This person impersonates a police officer and he held you up?"

Mike Smith
"He said he was a police officer, but when I went to the CIB office they told me that he is not a police officer. He just goes around the station. That's all they told me."

Daniel Ortiz
"He goes around the police station and that's how he got the crown?"

Mike Smith
"Yes."

Daniel Ortiz
"Tell us how you actually escape from this person."

Mike Smith
"When he took me at his aunt's house I told him that I was going for some money at Raccoon Street at my aunt. I ask him to wait for me in the front yard. That's when I escape; I jump through the back fence and I ran straight on the canal side to the police station to the CIB office."

"The CIB did a great job; they arrive at the place and arrest him very quickly, so I really applaud the CIB officers."

Daniel Ortiz
"Do you know this person?"

Mike Smith
"Yes, I know this person. We went to cadet corps in 2005."

Daniel Ortiz
"So you figured that during that time when you didn't see him that he became a police officer?"

Mike Smith
"I knew from a long time that he wasn't an officer. But every time I see him with a gun. I don't know if it's real or fake but he always carry it around."

"When he was harassing me everybody says it's ok because he is an officer."

Daniel Ortiz
"At this moment he is arrested by the police and they are going to bring criminal charges against him?"

Mike Smith
"The officer says that he will be charge for kidnapping, robbery, impersonating a police officer and he will be charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon."

Daniel Ortiz
"He is facing a battery of charges because of this incident where he kidnapped you?"

Mike Smith
"Yes."

He was released four hours after his ordeal started, at 4:00 on Thursday morning. Police are looking for Reginald Wagner.
